| Floods In The TRNC |
|
BAYRAK RADIO TELEVISION 27/02/2010 The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus lived a nightmare yesterday when heavy rainfalls led to a disaster across the country. Heavy destruction was the result of flash floods where some houses had to be evacuated. Rescue teams and government officials rushed to the destruction scenes where capital Lefkosa and Girne were hit most. Crisis desks were immediately set up in many regions. The TRNC woke up with the sun today but bad news came from the Meteorological Department- which said rainfalls will continue today and tomorrow too. The disaster was deepened when the Gonyeli dam and several brooks overflew in the afternoon yesterday. Many roads were closed to the traffic. Main roads of Lefkosa-Girne and Lefkosa-Guzelyurt have been opened under the police control. However the road between Ortakoy and the Dr. Burhan Nalbantoglu State Hospital remains closed. Phone lines at the State Hospital stopped working too, and officials warn citizens to dial 223 30 49 for 112’s emergency services. The industrial zone in Lefkosa remains in a bad condition too. Power cuts occurred in some areas and officials say electricity will be provided after flood waters are dried up. Meanwhile, the Council of Ministers held an extraordinary session this morning to evaluate the disaster. Lefkosa Mayor Cemal Bulutoglulari also attended the Council’s session. The Council agreed on the establishment of 12 committees to work on damage assessment. Speaking to reporters before the meeting, Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu promised that wounds of the flood will be healed. Also announcing the decisions of the Council of Ministers after the meeting, Eroglu said that ministers will hold inspection tours across the country and listen to the flood victims. Answering a question on the dangerous construction on stream beds, the Premier said they can’t demolish the houses there but can oblige house owners to make insurance. |
