President Mehmet Ali Talat and the Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias met yesterday again within the framework of comprehensive negotiations aimed at settling the Cyprus Problem. The chapter on economy was discussed during the meeting which lasted five hours.

President Mehmet Ali Talat told reporters upon his return to the Presidential palace that the discussions on the economy chapter will continue on the 16th of March when the two leaders will meet again. The President said that they would then move onto the chapter on EU matters.

Responding to claims in the Greek Cypriot press that the Turkish Side had changed stance in favor of a unitary state, the President denied the speculations, stating that the negotiations were being conducted with the aim of reaching a federal settlement.

Speaking to the press at the end of yesterday’s round, the UN Secretary General’s Special Advisor to Cyprus Alexander Downer said the two leaders had met most of the meeting in tete-a-tete and had discussed various aspects of the chapter on economy.

He said that the special representatives will be meeting sometime next week to resume discussions on the issue.

The UN Special Advisor also praised recent remarks made by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the ongoing talks.
