Eight applications have been made to the High Electoral Council by candidates who are to stand in April’s Presidential elections.

President Mehmet Ali Talat, the leader of the National Unity Party – Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu, UBP deputy Tahsin Ertugruloglu, Arif Salih Kirdag, Retired Colonel Mustafa Kemal Tumkan, Zeki Besiktepeli, Ayhan Kaymak and Serap Tezcan applied to the Council yesterday to register their candidacy.

All candidates, except Eroglu, are independent.

Prime Minister Eroglu was the first to apply to the Council to register his candidacy for the Presidency with loud cheers of his supporters.

Mr Eroglu was followed by President Talat who was accompanied by some CTP-BG mayors and presidents of some civil society organizations.

The UBP deputy Tahsin Ertugruloglu was among those applying to the High Electoral Council to register his candidacy despite a warning from the UBP that his party membership would drop if he applied to the Council.
The final list of the presidential candidates will be made public by the Council on Monday, the 22nd of March.
