TRNC 26 Anniversary Celebrations

The 26. anniversary of the proclamation of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) was celebrated at the Churchill Hotel in Central London. The reception was organised by the TRNC London Representative Kemal Koprulu and was attended by the TRNC Tourism and Culture Minister Ersan Saner. ATCA Representative Kerem Hasan and Committee Members were present.

Minister Saner said that they were working to enable suitable conditions to help Turkish Cypriots living abroad to move back to the TRNC, and underlined the importance of the sovereign status of the Turkish Cypriot people, who had waged an immense struggle from 1963 - 1974. Mr Saner sent a message to the diaspora living abroad, emphasising the importance of the TRNC, and the need for the Turkish Cypriots to always remain loyal to their homeland - Northern Cyprus. In a statement to ATCA, Minister Saner said that he had appreciated the lobbying done by ATCA on the lines of "Respect, Equality, and Recognition", and said they supported the work which was representative of the Turkish Cypriot people living all over the world.

ATCA Representative Kerem Hasan said: "The high turnout at the reception in London and such diverse civil representation clearly showed the will of the Turkish Cypriots, who want the existence of their own Republic. The Turkish Cypriots will never surrender their state or their absolute equality in Cyprus, and expressions across civil groups have shown the determination to continue the struggle in unity for this aim".

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was proclaimed in 1983, following continued rejections by the Greek Cypriots to reach a federal solution to the Cyprus issue.
